Ralph Nader: Has Corruption Become Institutionalized?

Source: SoftPanorama

As history unfolds with various 'movements' progressing forward, the idea of corruption becoming 'institutionalized' over the past few decades has become apparent more now then ever before.  Especially, given the recent #metoo movement which has uncovered (made public) which has been known and discussed quietly in 'after hour chat sessions and other venues' -- harassment has been widespread and not dealt with on an institutionalized level.  Only with the uncovering in Hollywood - which blew the movement across the nation, are we uncovering other forms of corruption.

In a recent e-mail newsletter, Ralph Nader talks about the momentum of Bill Curry regarding corruption at the institutional level as shown in his letter below:

Bill Curry is wondering why corruption is the center of debate or upheaval in every country but ours. He writes that, “Hardly a week goes by without a front-page report of a government toppled or convulsed by corruption scandals.”
Why not our country? Reasons abound. One is that corruption has been institutionalized. It is much more systematic than merely putting cash in an envelope to get a procurement contract from public officials.
Curry, a former Connecticut state Senator, elected state Comptroller, and counsellor to President Bill Clinton, argues that the people hate corruption but are not given its true costs.  Curry says, “As Connecticut Comptroller I learned how to count it. An example: a single corrupt bargain struck with health insurers cost the state $1.5 billion, an amount equal to the record deficit our current governor faced on taking office in 2011. There was never a prosecution.”
The ways private commercial interests corrupt public officials are well known. They come by way of exploding campaign funding, lobbyists with gifts swarming over legislatures, speaking fees, revolving doors for corporatists taking key government positions to thwart law enforcement, and lucrative offers to lawmakers in anticipation of their retirement. All these lures are much more persuasive when the general public is quiet and unorganized.
Legalized corruption is all over Washington, D.C. as trillions of dollars of giveaways, subsidies, bailouts, and no-bid contracts proliferate. Did you know that both domestic and foreign mining companies are allowed to explore your federal public lands for minerals? Under an obsolete 1872 mining law, defended by the American Mining Congress, companies have discovered gold, silver, molybdenum, and other ”hard-rock minerals” on our public lands and pay no more than $5 an acre to mine and sell these valuable minerals, without paying any royalties back to the U.S. Treasury.
For example, according to a 1994 report by the Mineral Policy Institute, American Barrick Resources Corporation of Canada – a Canadian gold company—received “patents” on 1,038 acres. The Mineral Policy Center explains that a “patent” as follows: “A company that discovers a valuable mineral deposit on its claim can “patent,” or gain fee title to, the land for a price not to exceed $5.00 per acre. Upon patent issuance, title to public lands is transferred to private ownership.” Barrick “purchased” the 1,038 acres for $5,190 or $5 per acre. Those acres held mineral reserves valued at more than $10 billion. Quite a return on investment for long-standing institutionalized corruption made possible by campaign cash, wining and dining, and other goodies.  Where is the organized opposition to this robbing of our country’s commonwealth? No other country in the world gives away its hard-rock minerals for free.
Curry maintains that the two major parties are on the same page with corruption. Their political consultants like corporate giveaways because they make most of their money consulting for corporations. The media, he says “is so unattuned to the issue it doesn’t even include it in Election Day exit polls that ask voters to pick their top concerns from a list of 17 issues.” When one pollster put “corruption” on the list in 2009 and 2010, guess what, “it finished first both times, beating out ‘jobs and the economy’ in the teeth of the recession.”
Why is corruption at the top? Because most people know that corruption is the problem that turns government against the people. Corruption affects taxes, waste, health care, drug prices, credit gouging, energy conversion, upgrading public facilities, living wages and cracking down on corporate crime, fraud, and obscene corporate welfare (crony capitalism.) It is behind luscious contracts to the military hardware services industry that President Eisenhower warned about in his 1961 farewell address. Corruption also primes the pump for criminal wars of aggression such as the war in Iraq—by unaccountable politicians like war criminals Bush and Cheney.
It is not a coincidence, Curry relates, that countries like those in western Europe which have less public corruption and more honest procurement contracting practices also have higher standards of living and health than we do.
Curry is fed up, has fire in his belly, and wants action.
Taking off from his past writings and experience over the years and a recent roundtable discussion we had in Washington on massive public and private billing fraud, he has drafted a “call to action” seeking a quantification and analysis of the corruption epidemic, “followed by a strategy for building a movement and influencing media and political elites.”
The next step in mobilizing, he urges, would be “a national conference in Washington this fall to which every institution active in this issue is invited and asked to adopt a declaration to commit to a fight.”
Are any foundations or enlightened people of means committed to this fundamental turnaround in our political economy and its immense, prompt benefits? After all, when so much that is wrong is made “legal” or “plausible” by corrupt lawmakers, the peoples’ focus can be quite efficient—535 members of Congress and 7,383 state lawmakers for one gigantic jumpstart in a key election year!

Institutionalized corruption is widespread in the United States today.  Over the last few decades, Americans have become desensitized to the state of corruption within various institutions.  Which has led to the feeling of being powerless over changing the institutions.  That is slowly changing -- especially with social media.

Yes, today still blatant examples of the 'old' state of corruption emerge which match the image at the beginning of the post.  Take for example, the recent statements by the White House Budget Director and interim Head of the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau -- Mitch Mulvaney.  In a recent article (op-ed) from the 'New York Time' titled "Mick Mulvaney’s Guide to Exploiting the Trump Swamp" the following was behavior was highlighted which occurred in front of 1,300 bankers regarding corruption:

Mr. Mulvaney is reportedly very close to President Trump. This week, in front of 1,300 bankers and lending officials in Washington, he said that when he was a South Carolina congressman, he would meet only with lobbyists who had contributed to his campaign. “We had a hierarchy in my office in Congress,” he said. “If you’re a lobbyist who never gave us money, I didn’t talk to you. If you’re a lobbyist who gave us money, I might talk to you.”

This is a blatant statement of the state of institutionalized corruption.  Why did this statement not set fire to the lobbying landscape across the United States?  Or at least call into question the behavior of both lawmakers and lobbyists?  Again, the fact is that the public might feel powerless, when in fact they are more powerful than ever before.  How?

Conclusion...

Today, we live in a social media dominated world.  Videos of goofy acts or acts of inhumane behavior go viral quickly.  If each of us followed Bill Curry's pursuit of justice outlined above, real change could occur.  Change will take all of the citizens of this great nation -- not just a select few high profile celebrities or activists.  Each of us should write or call our elected representatives and require that action be taken to remove the corruption occurring in Washington D.C.

Our elected representatives do not hear enough from the people (their constituents) at any given time.  Therefore, they are under the impression that their brief visits to various events back home while on break in Washington give them enough of a 'temperature' of their constituent wishes and beliefs. Have you read or asked your elected official about their various stances on important issues to society?  Have you engaged in local politics?  If not, why?  If each of us have not tried to engage in the political process, then each of us have no ground on which to complain about the process.  Instead of having the current debate, each of us should take action and start promoting the process of change.  Only then will institutionalized corruption begin to become reduced (not eradicated) over time.  Which is what each of us can hope for at this present time.

French President Macron Calls On U.S. Congress To Save The Planet

Source: NBC

French President Emmanuel Macron has been a HUGE proponent of the Paris Agreement.  Further.  This week the French President visited the White House with his wife.  Next stop was the most important stop of his trip.  The reason why I say this is due to the prospect of pleading with U.S. Congress to take serious the looming threats of not taking action to mitigate (or reduce) greenhouse gases (GHG) along with other negative contributions to the environment.  The United States Congress was met with the following statement regarding the health of our planet from President Macron:

“We must find a smooth transition to a low-carbon economy. Because what is the meaning of our life, really, if we work and live destroying the planet, one sacrifice things for the future of our children. What is the meaning of our life if our decision, our conscious decision, is to reduce the opportunities for our children and grandchildren,”

President Macron is respected and admired by activist who believe that any help from other nations to attempt to talk sense into the U.S. politicians about the detrimental effects of climate change.   Which publicly is not easy.  Any public display of agreement by U.S. Congressional leaders as shown in the video below is support for initiatives which move the world toward renewable energy to reduce the impacts of climate change.  Here is a video which show the overwhelming support for the obvious notion that "... there is no planet B":

Take home message: Move toward renewable energy sources in an effort to lower the overall carbon footprint of the world as of right now.  Hopefully in doing so, the planet will not be ruined for future generations.

Conclusion...

Regardless of the personal opinions of people on the deniability of climate change, the world is moving toward renewable energy.  Investments are being lined up as we speak.  Each day uncovers new news of possible deals to convert over from a fossil fuel based economy to an economy fueled by energy which is less detrimental to the environment.  And this is a good initiative to pursue.  Why would we as stewards of the planet want to harm the planet on which each of us depend on?  That does not mean that each of us have to agree -- as stated in the video above.

Although, working toward a better future, one with jobs and a cleaner environment sounds good to me.  The future of renewable energy sources is exciting, why not get involved and learn what your part can be in the transition?  Change will arrive over time.  Progress on this scale does not occur over night.  Although, if change does not start to occur, change will never happen.  The last stage in which we as a nation want to find ourselves in is that of 'stagnation' -- where we are just dormant for years to come.  Let's start to advocate for change.

Parameters: Oil vs. Corn based Ethanol - A Tug-Of-War between Trump Administration and Congressional Leaders

Source: TreeHugger

The renewable energy sector seems to be caught up in a 'tug-of-war' lately between the Trump Administration and the Congressional leadership of our country.  Central to the discussion is the percentage of ethanol derived from corn.  How much ethanol should the agriculture industry be tapped for?  In these times of uncertainty, the agriculture industry is fighting 'tooth and nail' for any business they can get.  Although the Trump Administration is fighting equally hard trying to get more waivers for the oil refineries.  Here is an excerpt introducing the fight presently underway from 'Politico Energy' yesterday:

YOU CAN'T ALWAYS GET WHAT YOU WANT: Despite efforts by President Donald Trump to settle a long-running dispute between ethanol backers and the refining industry, progress on a biofuels deal has stalled. Instead, the administration has taken a piecemeal approach to the policy, pushing for an expanded market for higher blends of ethanol, while handing out exemptions to the Renewable Fuels Standard to small refiners.
Trump, for his part, has huddled multiple times with members of his Cabinet, industry and lawmakers from both corn belt and oil states, Pro's Eric Wolff reports. But so far, there's been little progress in striking a grand deal. At odds are the independent refiners, who say they feel financial stress from the RFS, and the agriculture sector, which is anxious to expand the market for corn ethanol.
Trump has promised to allow year-round sales of 15 percent ethanol blends of gasoline, while EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt has so far granted more than two dozen temporary waivers to small refineries that exempt them from the mandate requiring them to blend ethanol with gasoline. "After 18 months of pursuing various regulatory forms of relief and a handful of Oval Office confabs, the merchant refiners ended up with [an increase in E15] taking even more market share away from them in return for some small refiner hardship waivers - and some of them did not even get that," one oil refining source told Eric.
And Pruitt's controversies stemming from his first-class flights, security spending and condo rental from a lobbyist, have left the EPA chief unable to make an aggressive case for instituting price caps many refiners want on the biofuel credits, according to an administration source. Read more here.
Democrats weigh in: House Energy and Commerce ranking member Frank Pallone and Agriculture ranking member Collin Peterson sent this letter to the president on Friday, expressing concern with the waivers issued by Pruitt to small refineries, writing it "undermines the goal of the RFS program, creates uncertainty and economic hardship in the agricultural community, and gives unfair advantage to specific facilities within the refining sector."

As the public has learned over the past year and a half, the Trump Administration is bent on supporting the 'oil' industry rather than leaning toward the emerging and profitable renewable energy sector.  Despite a large number of investments diverting from the fossil fuel based industries and being refocused on investing in sustainable - renewable energy sources, the current administration chooses to hold onto a dying position.  A recent example is the giant Shell Oil Corporation investing in renewable energy infrastructure -- which was introduced in a blog post written recently on this site.

For those who are unaware of the 'RFS' - the Renewable Fuel Standard - here is a brief introduction and historical background from the Wikipedia page to put the 'tug-of-war' into perspective:

The Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) is an American federal program that requires transportation fuel sold in the United States to contain a minimum volume of renewable fuels. The RFS originated with the Energy Policy Act of 2005 and was expanded and extended by the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007
History
The RFS program requires renewable fuel to be blended into transportation fuel in increasing amounts each year, escalating to 36 billion gallons by 2022. Each renewable fuel category in the RFS program must emit lower levels of greenhouse gases relative to the petroleum fuel it replaces.[1]
The first RFS, usually referred to as RFS1, required that 4 billion gallons of biofuel be used in 2006. This requirement was scheduled to rise to 7.5 billion gallons in 2012. These requirements were passed as part of the Energy Policy Act of 2005. The Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 changed and broadened these rules. EISA was signed into law by President George W. Bush and the bill was overwhelmingly supported by members of congress from both parties.[2]
The changes required by the 2007 legislation are usually referred to as RFS2. RFS2 required the use of 9 billion gallons in 2008 and scheduled a requirement for 36 billion gallons in 2022. The quota for 2022 was to allow no more than a maximum of 15 billion gallons from corn-starch ethanol and a minimum of 16 billion gallons from cellulosic biofuels.[2]
In reaction to the implementation of the RFS, passage of EISA, and other measures to support ethanol, the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) expressed alarm. In 2007, OPEC's secretary general, Abdalla El-Badri, said that increased use of biofuels by the United States could cause OPEC to decrease production. Other OPEC leaders openly worried about "security of demand."[3]

The changes outlined in the Renewable Fuel Standard are indicative of the changing economic (investment) environment unfolding around the world today.  With the Paris Agreement - which is solely based on self-imposed restrictions and projections, each participant is moving toward promoting and investing in a world where sustainable energy plays a much greater role.  I have written about the progress over the course of the Trump Administration.  The posts can be found in the index below or by clicking here.

Conclusion...

The current state of affairs regarding renewable energy is not under debate.  A large number of world countries are moving toward investing and capitalizing on the current momentum toward renwable energy.  The transition must occur sometime.  With the realization that there is not enough oil in the ground to sustain the world at the current rate of usage (see posts here and here), the much needed transition into the renewable energy space is inevitable.

The question is when are the important players (money markets, corporations, governments, etc.) going to move on the transition?  Based on the momentum and actions displayed on the world stage over the last year and a half, the transition appears to have started to gain momentum.  Which is great.  The future of renewable energy seems to be great.  Jobs will continue to be created with new technologies rolling out to the market.  And the opponents of such change will be quieted by the loud cheers of the welcoming countries around the world.  Where do you stand on this issue?  Read up and form an opinion on the matter.

How Do Scientists Think?

Source: InsideHigerEd

Welcome To Mike Thinks

How do scientists think?  I would suggest that scientists think more like you do than you might think.  Why?  Over the years of being a scientist -- after the formal educational process -- a comment that I frequently hear is that of the following: Scientists (you) think differently....your brain is wired differently.  Really? I would greatly disagree with that statement.  Scientists are curious people.  Kids are curious people.  Each of us were at one time point in history -- Kids.  Therefore, each of us at one time point where scientists.  Other professional scientists may disagree and say that there is a large difference.  Although, the underlying curiosity is the same along with the follow through of carrying out an experiment.  After an experiment is carried out, what is done with the results is the main differentiation.  Professional scientists will publish the results in their respective journals which serve as avenues to report their experimental findings (experimental results).   This begs the following question:

At what point does a child growing up curious (like scientists) reduce his/her curiosity to carry out experiments?

The answer to this question is the reason why all of the inhabitants (citizens) of the planet are not professional scientists.  Where did our thirst for curiosity disappear to?

Of course, I have always held the opinion that we are all still scientists in our own unique manner.  In light of that, I have chosen to write about how I think on this blog post.  There are two main types of blog posts on this site to 'demystify the life of a scientist'.  The first deals with large numbers or various statistics reported in the popular news with no real context provided.  Take for example the oil spill in China shown below:

Source: The Guardian

At first sight, the picture appears to portray an extremely large oil spill.  The article which is discussed on a previous blog only serves to give us a total amount of oil spilled.  After which, I used dimensional analysis to compare the statistic of 136,000 metric tons of oil spilled (in the picture above) to past oil spills.  The results of the analysis indicated that the spill was small compared to previous spills.

A reader might not be able to infer that result just from reading the amount of oil spilled in 'units of metric tons' instead of 'gallons'.  This example (blog post) serves to justify learning the how to carry out the method of 'dimensional analysis' to compare numbers or at least cast them into context in order to get a better understanding of the reported statistic.

If you are interested in learning more about 'dimensional analysis,' then click here to read a recent post.  For a list of all of the blog posts written on this blog site that contain dimensional analysis, click here.

What about other relevant questions regarding the oil spill shown above?

Of course, the question of the magnitude of the oil spill might not have been your (the reader's) first concern or query.  Other questions regarding enormous amounts of oil spilled are:

1) What type of oil was spilled?

2) How harmful was the oil spill to the environment?

3) How long does the a large spill take to clean up?

4) How difficult is the clean up process?

5) What does the clean up process entail for such a spill?

6) How do authorities measure the total volume of the oil spill?

7) Why should I care about the oil spill?

If any of these questions might cross your mind after looking at the picture above, then the subject matter of 'science and the environment' -- of which a portion of the blog posts appear on this site might interest you.  Click here to access blog posts dealing with the questions above!

Conclusion...

Are you convinced that we think alike?  That you really do think like a scientist?  If you are still not convinced that you are a scientist at heart, then click on either hyperlink below.  The first hyperlink is a list of blog posts which deal with statistics which are reported in the popular news.  Whereas the second hyperlink is a list of past blog posts which are concerned with the topics which occupy my mind and that of other scientists.  A look into my mind.  What am I concerned with or think about when reading any article?  Read and compare your thoughts.  You might find that you think more like a scientist than you previously thought.  Regardless, enjoy the reading and stay hungry to educate yourself by satisfying your undying curiosity.  Education is a life long process.

What Is Dimensional Analysis?

What is dimensional analysis?  Have you ever used dimensional analysis in your everyday life?  Here is the introductory description which is located on the Wikipedia page for "Dimensional Analysis":

In engineering and science, dimensional analysis is the analysis of the relationships between different physical quantities by identifying their base quantities (such as length, mass, time, and electric charge) and units of measure (such as miles vs. kilometers, or pounds vs. kilograms vs. grams) and tracking these dimensions as calculations or comparisons are performed. Converting from one dimensional unit to another is often somewhat complex. Dimensional analysis, or more specifically the factor-label method, also known as the unit-factor method, is a widely used technique for such conversions using the rules of algebra.[1][2][3]
The concept of physical dimension was introduced by Joseph Fourier in 1822.[4] Physical quantities that are of the same kind (also called commensurable) have the same dimension (length, time, mass) and can be directly compared to each other, even if they are originally expressed in differing units of measure (such as inches and meters, or pounds and newtons). If physical quantities have different dimensions (such as length vs. mass), they cannot be expressed in terms of similar units and cannot be compared in quantity (also called incommensurable). For example, asking whether a kilogram is greater than, equal to, or less than an hour is meaningless.
Any physically meaningful equation (and likewise any inequality and inequation) will have the same dimensions on its left and right sides, a property known as dimensional homogeneity. Checking for dimensional homogeneity is a common application of dimensional analysis, serving as a plausibility check on derived equations and computations. It also serves as a guide and constraint in deriving equations that may describe a physical system in the absence of a more rigorous derivation.

Wow!  Does that sound complicated?  Basically, what the description says above is that if you are comparing the mass of two oranges, both the units of measurement (weight) in this case have to be in the same 'units' - grams, pounds, kilograms, etc.  If you weight orange number #1 and report a weight of 70 grams, then try to compare a second orange's weight reported as 0.400 kg (kilograms) - then the comparison cannot be completed.

At least until you convert the weight of orange #1 to units of kilograms or weight #2 to units of grams.  If both weights were expressed in the same units -- say grams, then orange #1 weighing = 70 grams -- would be much smaller than orange #1 weighing = 400 grams.  The same logic applies to base quantities (dimensions) -- like length, mass, volume, height, speed, etc.

How about trying another route to clarify the description in the excerpt above.  If you have ever tried to follow a recipe while cooking, then chances are you have engaged in 'dimensional analysis' without knowing that you were doing so.  Don't believe me? Follow the quick cooking example below.

Example: Cooking

Here is a quick example of using 'dimensional analysis' in your kitchen.  Take the recipe shown below as an example:

The recipe above calls for 100 mL of milk.  That is 100 milliliters of milk.   What if the kitchen in which you are preparing the shake does not contain a 'measuring cup' shown below which is extremely useful in converting between different units of measurement:

Source: HomeDepot

Upon closer inspection of the image of a 'measuring cup' above, one can easily see a series of markings at different heights with different labels.  These labels indicate different volumes of measurement in different units.  According to the image of the recipe shown earlier, the amount of milk called for in creating the shake was 100 mL -- Which could easily be converted using the instrument above -- i.e. measuring cup.

Although, what would you do if you did not have a measuring cup within the kitchen in which preparation of the shake was taking place?  How would a person find the conversion factor to convert between units of 'milliliters' and units of 'cups'?  One easy method with the advent of the internet has been to resort to to a 'search engine' like 'Google' or 'Bing'.

Proceed to bring up a web browser and bring up Google.com and type in the search space: "How Many Milliliters In A Cup?" and the web page with the conversion (interactive) columns should appear as shown below:

Note: The conversion shown above is 'interactive' - which means that the labels are 'drop down' menus which can serve to change either 'units of measurement' or 'dimensions' (i.e. length, area, volume, time, speed, etc.).  Feel free to play with the web page to convert between units of various dimensions.

Next, with the conversion factor known which will assist us in converting between units of 'cups' and units of 'milliliters', the remaining step in the conversion is to carryout a mathematical operation as shown below:

The result indicates that in order to follow the recipe (approximately -- not precisely), roughly 1/2 cup of milk will correspond to 100 milliliters of milk.  Note that the conversion is approximate -- since 1/2 = 0.5 not 1/2 = 0.423 !!!

Is the method of carrying out a dimensional analysis problem is clear?  If the answer is yes, then you are ready to read past blog posts which mainly use 'dimensional analysis' to cast statistics reported in the news into perspective -- click here to access the index of past blog posts.  If you are not comfortable with carrying out 'dimensional analysis' problems, see the tutorial below.

Dimensional Analysis Tutorial

A Tutorial on Dimensional Analysis is shown below:

After watching the video above along with reading the content of the blog post so far, you may be wondering where to get conversion values if not from the internet.  Science textbooks have conversion tables.  After a quick search of conversion tables, the 'Accidental Scientist' appeared with a host of information.  Here is a screenshot of an example of a table of conversions below.  Note: if you click on the source, you will be directed to the site:

As you can see, there is no need to memorize conversions -- at least all of the conversions.  That is what reference materials are for when needed.

Conclusion...

In the paragraphs above, the useful (and fun) method of carrying out calculations using 'dimensional analysis' was shown.  Armed with the power to carry out comparisons with conversion factors allows you to verify a large portion of statistics which are reported in the popular news on a day-to-day basis.  Is this useful?  Depends on how much energy that you choose to exert in understanding the process of using it to live a better life.

Understanding the power of comparison with conversion factors will add extra dimensions of happiness to your life.  How do I know?  When a person can visualize or comprehend the magnitude of a reported statistic by putting the value into perspective using dimensional analysis, the problem or subject matter of the news article becomes that much more useful to the reader.  Again, thank you for visiting the website and check out the dimensional analysis blog posts by clicking here.

Science Topics, Thoughts, and Parameters Regarding Science, Politics, And The Environment!

Source: FreePik

Hello and welcome to the "index of blog posts" which are concerned with 'science and the environment' along with other relevant topics.  Namely, the blog posts falling under the subject heading "Science & Politics: Why Is Science Research Now?"  Science covers a vast array of topics that can often make the field seem very complicated.  Nonetheless, this fact should motivate the reader (you) to engage and learn more about how science plays a large role in the environment in which we live along with the planet on which we live.

Science is fun and engaging in the process of learning a wide range of how science is integrated into our society will inevitably allow you to be more empowered in society as a result.  Don't believe me.  Just read the topics below.  In the next paragraph, I briefly explain why I have decided to 'divide up' the index of blog posts from a single page into two pages.

The point of dividing the 'index of blog posts' up between those blog posts which deals with large numbers or strange numbers reported in the mass media.  Plus, I have written a large number of posts over the last few years.  This means that navigating through a single page is not desirable.  The topics below are concerned with science (in general) along with science in our society.  This, in turn, means that science will be inserted into the popular news media on various levels.  I have split the blog posts below into three categories: (1) Longform reads, (2) Thoughts, and (3) Parameters. Here is my reasoning for subdivisions.

Long-form reading takes time.  The point of the blog post is to teach or demystify my life as a scientist and how I (a scientist) view the world.  People have misconceptions about scientists which might even prevent them from engaging with scientists on various levels -- in everyday interactions (to cite one example).  In light of that misconception, I believe that expressing my thoughts and what I find to be relevant along with sharing with you will give you the best idea as to what is going on in my head.

Last but not least, for those readers who do not have a tremendous amount of time to read 'long articles,' I have created two sections -- "Thoughts" and "Parameters".  The two words will appear before the blog post to specify the type of blog post.  If neither word is present, then there is no length restriction -- watch out -- I can easily blab on forever.  Here is a description of the difference between the two types of posts - which I wrote a few months ago into a blog post.  The summary is this:

Blog posts with "Thoughts" at the beginning are for the reader to see what I am interested in, but do not have the time to research (in depth) to explain on this site.  I reserve the right to return to a "thoughts" article and elaborate in the future.  These are "short" blog posts to spur 'thoughts' within the reader (and writer - me) to consider.
Whereas "Parameters" is meant to introduce a "parameter" which is part of an "equation" for a given topic.  For example, horse racing might be the topic.  The parameter chose was to consider the horses (injuries, strength, stamina) along with 'depth' or 'type' of dirt on which the track was made.  The 'type' of dirt along with the 'depth' of the dirt on the track turn out to greatly influence the speed and stamina of the horse in a race -- Who knew that?  The importance of posts with these two titles is to start the reader on an independent exploration into a given topic.  Or to give the reader a 'taste' of the topic without elaborating -- like I have presently now.  I will be quiet.

With that being said, enjoy the articles which deal with science and the world around us below.  Remember, the other page is mainly about statistics and numbers which appear in the media which need to be deconstructed further in my mind.  Enjoy!
