What is the status of a COVID-19 vaccine or treatment?

The COVID-19 virus has taken over the world.  Dominating all facets of the lives of citizens of the planet.  Each of us is impacted (negative or positive) in some manner associated with COVID-19.  President Trump tested positive over a week ago and received the best cocktail of treatments.  Questions remain about the status of the President's health and COVID-19 treatment.  Additionally, questions remain about the COVID-19 virus vaccine, treatment, and pandemic.  Below are a few thoughts on the matter from different sources.

Let us rewind the news cycle 3 weeks (which is a large amount these days) and look at a video posted on CNN's YouTube Channel.  CNN has put together a conference (virtual) called "CITIZEN" in which interviews are conducted with professionals. Professionals regarding issues that are critical to all citizens for the upcoming election 2020.  One particular interview stood out to me (as a scientist) about the COVID-19 pandemic was between Dr. Sanji Gupta and Dr. Anthony Fauci is shown below (29 minutes in length):

The interview provides an in-depth look at the past and present.  Lessons learned and lost during the last 9 months.  I enjoyed the interview and learned quite a bit from the discussion.  I recommend each person watching the interview before the election to gain better insight into the virus, putting the world into a pandemic.

Scientific research is a moving target.  Time allows scientists to learn how to move forward by allowing time to test hypotheses.  Science is not done overnight.  There are no quick answers.  If a person is looking to science to solve the vaccination problem for a COVID-19, the process takes time.

I would hesitate to use the word 'cure' because that implicates that the virus would be eradicated and go away.  Which is not what happens when a person or community is vaccinated for a given disease.  The disease is still present, but each person has built up antibodies to fight the pathogen (i.e., viral load) entering the body.

As we approach flu season, wearing a mask along with reducing your outside exposure to crowded venues will help reduce the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

That is not to mention the additional time needed to produce a large enough quantity of vaccine to distribute.  Additionally, the distribution time would be drawn out as our supply chain takes time to move on.

While the production and distribution along with supply lie waiting to be executed in the future, each of us citizens has a responsibility to do as much to help reduce the spread of the COVID-19 virus as possible.

The last video that I would like to share with the reader is an interview between CNN Anderson Cooper and Bill Gates on the status of COVID-19 vaccine development and distribution:

Wow!  That is where we are at, folks as a world!  Stay tuned!
