Ralph Nader: Democrats Cave in Secret Budget Deal with Trump

While the public was largely focused on the outcome of the impeachment of our President Donald Trump, behind the scenes, the fiscal budget deal for 2020 was being hashed out in Congress.  The budget for the entire nation is enormous and complicated.  I do not fully understand all of the relevant components.  That is why Congress holds the purse strings to the flow of cash to various entities within our government and civilian sector.



There are people (activists and lobbyists) who keep track of spending cuts and additions.  We can rely on their analyses and others in combination to assess the outcome of such large budget workings. Recently, Ralph Nader, the consumer activist at large wrote a newsletter regarding the Democrat's screw up with the budget deal which passed earlier this month:

Democrats Cave in Secret Budget Deal with Trump

While attention was focused on the House of Representatives’ impeachment of Donald J. Trump, legislators from both parties were secretly huddling with White House aides to seal a $1.4 trillion budget deal to fund the government until next September. They were rushing to do this to avoid a partial government shutdown starting December 21, 2019.

Had the budget been deliberated in open Congressional hearings, the media would have reported on this backroom deal and the people of this country would have had a chance to weigh in during the proceedings. Instead, a degraded Congress pulled a fast one on the citizens. This obfuscation is especially unacceptable considering that these lawmakers work only three days a week at best— when they are not in recess altogether.

Astoundingly the Democrats also caved in on Trump’s wall! After blocking Trump’s funding demand for the wall for three years, the Democrats approved $1.4 billion for the wall and even allowed Trump to divert funds from the Pentagon to that porous, wasteful barrier. In so doing, the Democrats legitimized one of the egregious, impeachable offenses Trump committed earlier this year when he seized $3.6 billion from the Pentagon’s budget in money not approved for the wall. The Washington Post reported that former secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus tweeted “As hurricane heads for Camp Lejeune Trump takes $3.6b from military for needless wall. Same amt Marines say needed to fix Lejeune after last storm.”

Trump usurped the Congressional “power of the purse,” to use James Madison’s phrase, under our Constitution. Unfortunately, Speaker Pelosi declined to charge Trump with this and other similarly impeachable spending violations. Now we know one reason why—the ongoing secret budget deal.

Just as astonishing was that the  Democrats caved on the funding for Obamacare. Year after year, Democratic leaders defended Obamacare, rather than support more efficient  full Medicare for All (with free choice of doctor and hospital). With the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals just deciding against the individual mandate in Obamacare, what does the House Democratic leadership do? They go along with the Republicans’ demand to repeal the medical device and health insurance taxes that were helping to fund Obamacare’s expansion of health insurance coverage for twenty million people.

It gets worse. The House Democrats approved a huge increase of $22 billion to the already bloated, wasteful military budget in return for Trump approving paid family leave for federal government employees. The Democrats made this deal instead of just pushing for paid maternity leave,  a right provided in all other Western democracies and numerous dictatorships in the world!

“No problem,” say the feeble Democrats. It is just more of the terrible practice by the Democrats of giving equal increases for the military budget, demanded by the Republican illegal war hawks, as the price for social service funds for low income families and children. What a grotesque way to spend taxpayer money!

To what level has this Congress lowered itself? Allowing the Trump dump to contaminate Congress even extends to cruel bigotry. They allowed Trump to extend his racist discrimination against the American citizens of Puerto Rico by reducing the Medicaid funds from $12 billion over four years to up to $5.7 billion over two years. The higher sum and longer term already were endorsed by Republican and Democratic leaders on two Congressional Committees.

Robert Greenstein, director of the highly respected Center on Budget and policy priorities, declared that “with another funding cliff looming in two years under the new agreement, Puerto Rico may continue to lack the certainty it needs to commit to long-term increases of its very low payment rates to health care providers [vendors] to stem their alarming exodus to the mainland, to provide coverage for such key health treatments as drugs to treat Hepatitis C, and to cover more poor, uninsured residents.”

Over the years, Congress has weakened its exclusive constitutional “power of the purse” by giving presidents waivers. As with the war powers, Congress has delegated more of its constitutional authority to the Executive Branch.

Just days ago, the racist President Trump bragged before a large campaign rally that he has cut off “six hundred million dollars” in aid for Palestinian relief, including aid for suffering children. This was a long term assistance program, under past Republican and Democratic administrations, to help provide the barest necessities to displaced and impoverished Palestinians whose territories are blockaded or militarily occupied by the Israeli government.

Washington justified such expenditures for both humanitarian and security purposes. No more, says the imperial Trump, exercising his Congressionally-granted waiver.

Congress has also long abandoned its constitutional authority over tariffs to the imperial presidency. Constitutional litigator Alan Morrison has challenged the White House’s unilateral imposition of tariffs—now involving tens of billions of dollars—on imports from foreign countries. In January Morrison will argue before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit that the authority to impose tariffs belongs to Congress.

What is Trump doing with these tens of billions of dollars deposited in the U.S. Treasury? Congress has not approved spending them for any programs or objectives. When I asked a staffer with the House Budget Committee what is being done with loads of money, she replied that “we have it under study.”

Secret government has its direct consequences for the American people, and abdication of congressional checks on the Executive Branch is harmful and cowardly.

Low Carb Action Network Wants To Change Federal Diet Advice?

Lobbyists in Washington D.C. are a dime a dozen.  Showing up at all relevant meetings with fact sheets and speaking within strict (Robert's Rules of Order) time limits.  Corporations have optimized their lobbyists to deploy at a moment's notice and be very useful when needed.  The news highlighted one group whose aim is to influence Federal Diet Advice.  Since we are heading into a new year -- which typically involves some type of diet into next year's regimen, I thought that 'low carb' efforts would be a topic worthy of highlighting.


According to recent reporting in Politico Agriculture, a small group of doctors is trying to influence regulations on a federal level:

LOW-CARB ADVOCATES LAUNCH NEW BID TO SWAY FEDERAL DIET ADVICE: The Low-Carb Action Network — launched on Wednesday by a small group of doctors, researchers and consumers who encourage Americans to cut back on bread, pasta and other carbohydrates — is aiming to influence federal nutrition advice being updated in 2020. The group said scientific research shows the diet can help prevent diseases, particularly Type 2 diabetes, and should be included in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

The network does not receive funding from industry and plans to set up a donation page on its website to raise money, a spokesperson said. It is “rapidly recruiting from the low-carb diet influencers and the thousands of people with success stories.”

USDA and HHS update the guidelines every five years based on a scientific report from an independent 20-member advisory committee, which shapes federal nutrition programs like school meals. The committee last year signaled it would review low-carb (and high-fat) diets, a move welcomed by a disparate group of nutrition experts, Atkins and keto followers, and the livestock sector.

Evaluating the science: The research on low-carb diets that the advisory committee includes in its review is a top concern among the leaders of the Low-Carb Action Network. Diets limiting carbs to 25 percent of calories each day have shown the most promise for weight loss and helping to reverse and prevent diseases, said Charles Cavo, chief medical officer at Pounds Transformation, which focuses on personalized nutrition, and a network member.

A USDA spokesperson said the advisory committee plans to “cast a wide net.” The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine establishes nutrient recommendations, and for carbohydrates set an acceptable range of between 45 to 65 percent of daily calories. The advisory committee plans to “systematically review science on dietary patterns” that fall outside of those ranges, the spokesperson said.

What the skeptics say: Some nutrition experts warn that the research on low-carb diets is new and the long-term health impacts are unclear. The American Diabetes Association earlier this year published a “consensus report” stating that low- and very-low carb diets have been shown to reduce the need for diabetes medication.

Regardless of how the information is included in the 'new dietary guidelines' (if at all), each of us should be aware of the potential impact for food in the nation this might have.  Maybe some, maybe none.  Awareness is key.  Diet advice is very controversial.



Especially, since each of us has unique physiology and genetic code.  One diet might work well with one person while the same diet does not work for me.  Why?  Science and medicine still need to further study this phenomenon.  Generalities do exist.  Although, even then, each of us should be concerned with what works for us rather than what works for others.

Merry Christmas Everyone!!!! We made it to the end of 2019 -- Woot Woot.  Christmas is here.  A time to reflect and celebrate.  The family is arriving and leaving depending on the time of day.  The warm or cold weather is being let into the house -- driving up or down the utility bills.  Among all of the chaos which Christmas brings are the celebratory presents which arrive gift wrapped -- waiting to be unveiled.

Another statistic is provided by Politico Agriculture regarding the number of Christmas trees chopped down year to year:

There were 10,000 farms cutting Christmas trees in 2017, down from about 12,000 in 2012, according to USDA data published in April. The number of harvested trees fell from 17.3 million to 15.1 million over that period.

Ralph Nader: Boeing’s Perilous Bungling Requires New Leadership

By now, the public has lost faith in Boeing's 737 Max aircraft.  And by proxy, the leadership (i.e., CEO) has been shown to shortcut troubleshooting steps, which would have ensured the safety of hundreds of people rather than kill them.  Which is sad.  As a result, the leadership must be changed.  Ralph Nader, a consumer activist, has tracked and fought corporations surrounding such litigious behavior -- reckless consumer safety.  Below, he gives a few details into the downward spiral Boeing Corporation has been traveling on.

Boeing’s Perilous Bungling Requires New Leadership

The Boeing executives and marketeers responsible for over-ruling Boeing engineers on the 737 MAX are still in charge of this very troubled aerospace company. Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg and the rubber-stamp Board of Directors, with two trophy ambassadors, are still running Boeing – thirteen months after the deadly 737 MAX crash in Indonesia and nine months after the deadly 737 MAX crash in Ethiopia that together took 346 lives. Boeing said in October that it would appoint a board member with deep air safety experience, but it has not happened yet. (Muilenburg is the only board member with an aeronautical engineering background)

Boeing has displayed an egregious pattern of mismanagement. The company is in trouble from contractors, the Department of Defense, and NASA. California Representative John Garamendi said Boeing had “serious quality issues” with the KC-46 aerial tanker used by the military and accused the company of “pushing profits over quality and safety.” According to NASA’s Inspector General Paul Martin, NASA “essentially paid Boeing higher prices to address a schedule slippage caused by Boeing’s 13-month delay.”

First-rate former Boeing engineers, including John Barnett and Ed Pierson, are exposing the reckless conditions at the Boeing 737 and 787 Dreamliner plants in Washington state and South Carolina.

Boeing managers and directors are still on the job and paying themselves handsomely.   These reckless marketeers are able to get away with this because Congress and the White House have disabled the FAA and turned it from a safety watchdog into an industry lapdog, leaving Boeing free to self-certify its planes.

With intensifying investigation by the House Committee on Transportation & Infrastructure, under the chairmanship of Congressman Peter DeFazio, a stunning internal FAA risk assessment turned up. After the October 29, 2018 Lion Air Flight 610 was hijacked by powerful MCAS software which took control of the aircraft from its pilots. A December 2018 FAA memo concluded that there would be 15 catastrophic crashes globally over the life of the 737 MAX fleet – ranging 30 to 45 years. That would mean the deaths of at least 2900 human beings.

Dr. Alan Diehl, an aerospace engineer with extensive experience at the FAA, at the Department of Defense, and in private business, told the Wall Street Journal that this prediction “would be an unacceptable number in the modern aviation-safety world.” The FAA analysis, surfacing very late in the wake of the two planes going down due to Boeing’s criminal negligence, was conditioned on the 737 MAX not flying until there are design and software corrections.

Chairman DeFazio noted other design problems with the Boeing 737 MAX, including rudder vulnerabilities.  Boeing leadership has displayed all sorts of derelictions,  including refusing to adequately inform pilots about the problems with the 737 MAX, producing faulty training manuals, and refusing to insist on full simulator training. Not only that, but the 787 Dreamliner has been found to have inadequate protection in case of lightning strikes (another Boeing bosses over-ruling of their own engineer’s warnings). Boeing also laid off hundreds of quality control inspectors in its factories, preferring to rely on machines.

The FAA’s new chief, Stephen Dickson,  recently warned Boeing to stop announcing ungrounding times for the approximately 400 737 MAX already in the hands of the airlines. He indicated that the FAA is stiffening its backbone a little by saying that the ungrounding schedule will be decided by the FAA. Boeing has just announced it was suspending production of the 737 MAX for the time being.

The next step for Dickson would be to ask FAA Deputy Administrator Daniel Elwell and Associate Administrator for Safety Ali Bahrami to resign. Elwell and Bahrami turned their backs on airline passenger safety, let Boeing dictate its own safety decisions, and kept the public and Congress in the dark. There is no way the FAA can recover its responsibilities so long as Elwell and Ali Bahrami are still in positions of any responsibility.

Bahrami admitted he wasn’t even aware of his own agency’s risk assessment of the Boeing 737 MAX, noted above.

Meanwhile, the families of the deceased continue to advocate that the Boeing 737 MAX be required to undergo full certification with full pilot simulator training. In their grief, these wonderful family members are fighting daily for the future safety of tens of millions of airline passengers.

It is clear that the public has lost confidence in the board (i.e. leadership) of Boeing.  Additionally, the increasing viewpoint among citizens is that elected members of Congress are in the pockets of corporate CEOs and therefore are reluctant to really slap any fine or charge on the airline.  Which is not good.  American citizens need to know (and see) that the politicians that are voted into office do indeed have their best interest in mind.  The time to act is now -- politicians and corporate leadership.  Show action!

President Trump will be remembered for many changes while occupying the Office of the President of the United States. The president has taken the office of the presidency to a new LOW.  Unbelievable.  His behavior has been unlike any other president who has occupied the Oval Office.  Each day, President Trump is likely to show the residents of the United States of America that he can act like a child.  Or as I like to put it -- a clown.  Recently, he hit a new all-time low.  See the example below.

Recently, Ralph Nader stated all of the offenses which have risen to the level of impeachment while running the Oval Office.  Each is worth considering or at least pondering on with the upcoming inevitable Senate inquiry.  Ralph Nader asks the following question: "Why Not Also Go With “The Kitchen Table” Impeachable Offenses for Removal?":

Why Not Also Go With “The Kitchen Table” Impeachable Offenses for Removal?

Will the Democrats move to impeach Trump for a narrow brace of violations and accept that the Senate Republicans will keep this outlaw in the White House? Or will they present the Senate with the President’s many proven impeachable offenses, thereby requiring the Senate Republicans, before live national television, in a public trial to defend Trump’s indefensible behavior?

Let’s start with the signal statement by Trump: “Then I have Article II, where I have the right to do whatever I want as President.” For almost three years, he has proceeded to engage in monarchical unconstitutional behavior in far more repeated, brazen ways than any preceding president. It is not even close.

The “abuse of the public trust” was stated by Alexander Hamilton as one definition of “high crimes and misdemeanors,” or an impeachable offense. Trump’s abuses provide deep evidence that he is (1) a serial, chronic, daily liar on matters of state, (2) a serial sexual predator, (3) a racist bigot, as demonstrated by his programs and policies, and (4) one who incites violence at rallies and in his tweets. Taken together, these abuses as an article of impeachment should be put before the Senate for them to defend. Millions of citizens will understand from their own core values that our country should shed this arrogant disgrace from our White House – through removal from office in the impeachment trial.

Another impeachment article should deal with Trump’s corruption in appointing henchmen to head health, safety and economic protection agencies with the objective of dismantling and disabling the laws enacted by Congress. Trump is bad for you when you breathe the air, drink the water, eat chicken, beef, pork, vegetables and fruit or work in hazardous places. Children are being exposed to dangerous pesticides, borrowers are being ripped off by financial companies and students are snagged by student loan traps and for-profit colleges. Trump sides with corporate criminals and fraudsters, and he expands crony capitalism with corporate welfare with your tax dollars. This is no mere de-regulation here and there. This is wholesale removal of the federal cops from the corporate crime beat and leaving you defenseless. Openly rejecting his constitutional duty to “faithfully” execute the laws is a major impeachable offense.

Then there is the loud desire to enrich himself by using the magnetic power of his office to attract patrons to his hotels and other properties in search of favors. Unlike past presidents, Trump defiantly retains direct profit seeking ownership of his businesses, leading to violations of the Constitution’s emoluments clause.

These are continual impeachable violations that the House of Representatives can make graphic and persuasive to millions of Americans who believe in the rule of law.

Important as the crooked attempt to bribe Ukraine to enhance his re-election campaign is – something Trump will continue to pursue given his past requests that Russia and China help him against his electoral opponents, this gross behavior has not moved the needle of public opinion. It is viewed as remote from the “kitchen table” concerns of voters. This is not the case with other documented impeachable offenses.

Here are two examples: Appointing “acting” henchmen to head agencies who have not been confirmed by the Senate and spending money prohibited by Congress by shifting funds approved by Congress thereby violating two federal statutes, in addition to the Constitution.

He has also threatened unilateral wars, which can only be declared by Congress, not by him, under our Constitution. He illegally sends armed forces anywhere he wants to destroy anyone he wants – prosecutor, judge, jury and executor all in one. More and more Americans are turning against the bankrupting military policies that only create more enemies and quagmires. Even conservatives are upset by Trump’s imperialistic acts.

Of course the contempt of Congress is Trump’s marquee unconstitutional outrage. Our founding fathers would have had him impeached after a few defiances of Congressional subpoenas, not to mention dozens of such rejections for witnesses and documents starting soon after his inauguration in January 2017 and intensifying during this impeachment period. Trump thinks he can strip-mine the basic oversight and investigative authority of Congress with impunity.

Bruce Fein, a constitutional scholar and litigator, asserts that the impeachment power given to Congress must operate under a greater urgency in 2019 than in 1781 when the federal government’s main employees were postmen. Now the Executive Branch is immensely larger and more dangerous. Without regard for the Constitution and the separation of powers between Congress and the judicial branch, this White House has weaponry and might that can destroy the Earth, install dictators and retard the world’s response to deadly climate disruption. Domestically, the President can accelerate the emergence of a fascistic, corporate state.

Fein says the founder’s view of impeachment as a proactive deterrent heading off worse situations, is given more urgency by the towering size and power of the executive branch today.

Going with a full, strong impeachment case in the House will galvanize the affected constituencies to support this effort. It will put the Senate Republicans in a very tight spot of choosing between their political futures and Constitutional duties or the political fate of Donald Trump.

Failure by Congress to prevent devastating precedents from being invoked and followed by future presidents will create a legacy of disgrace for Congress. Above all, for Speaker Pelosi, a broad and compelling indictment of Trump will move the citizens otherwise described by Abraham Lincoln as the “public sentiment,” to sustain an impeachment verdict by the Senate.

Anyone who has read the above statement should be able to agree that President Trump has committed at least one impeachable offense.  Therefore, removal from office is justified.

With the announcement of the new USMCA Trade Agreement last week by various news media outlets, there were the accompanying views on the new deal.  Farmers were expected to be significantly rewarded with the Trade deal.  Did the Trump administration keep their promises?  Some seem to think so.  Although others do not.  'R Calf USA,' a

Billings, Mont. – R-CALF USA, the nation’s largest producer-only cattle trade association that lobbies on behalf of America’s cattle farmers and ranchers released the following statements today following announcement of an agreement between House Democrats and the White House on the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

“Once again the House of Representatives and the White House have reached an agreement on a measure that will provide windfall profits for Agribusiness giants at the expense of America’s hard-working cattle farmers and ranchers.

“Although the U.S. cattle industry is the largest segment of American agriculture, making it an unsurpassed economic cornerstone for Rural America, the proposed USMCA does absolutely nothing to change provisions impacting cattle and beef trade between the United States, Canada and Mexico.

“In fact, the new USMCA is worse than the old NAFTA because at least for several years during the old NAFTA American cattle farmers and ranchers received the tool they needed to finally compete against the growing volume of cheaper imported beef and cattle from Canada and Mexico. From 2013 through 2015, mandatory country-of-origin labels for beef empowered America’s cattle producers to finally begin competing against this growing tide of cheaper, undifferentiated foreign beef.

“We’ve asked Congress and the President to, at the very least, restore mandatory country-of-origin labels (COOL) so American cattle farmers and ranchers could compete against the duty-free, cheaper and undifferentiated cattle and beef flowing into our country and depressing our markets.

“We’ve been ignored.

“We should now expect the downward trends caused by NAFTA to continue, if not accelerate, under the USMCA. Under NAFTA, we lost 20 percent of our cattle operations, wiped out 75 percent of our farmer-feeder-type feedlots, reduced our herd size by millions of head of cattle, and we’ve eliminated opportunities for current and aspiring cattle producers alike with the burden of a horrendous trade deficit in the trade of cattle and beef with Canada and Mexico.

“We urge Congress to vote the USMCA down in its present form.”

Time will tell if any party benefitted from the new deal.  Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnel stated briefly last week that he did not like the deal.  We will see how the agreement plays out over time.  So far, the Trump administration has done nothing other than screw up a Trade deal and lose provisions that were previously in the last agreement.

Over the past few months, I have been following the Trade War that President Trump started with China at the beginning of his time in office.  There has been a growing unease of President Trump's ability to negotiate a 'Great Trade Deal' for America over the same time.  Free trade advocates, including members of the Republican party, have been frustrated by President Trump's Trade War actions.



Undoubtedly, American farmers have taken the brunt of the Trade War.  Time and time again, news agencies have been able to find a farmer in America who has expressed frustration and skepticism regarding President Trump's Trade War.  But don't take my word for the apparent fact.  Here is a letter from the farming community on the matter.  The message from 2.5 million farmers across America to Speaker Pelosi, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer regarding farming and trade:

Dear Speaker Pelosi, Leader McConnell, Leader McCarthy, Leader Schumer:

On behalf of America's 2.5 million farmers and all Americans involved in the food and agriculture supply chains -- we are writing to urge you to quickly pass the United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement (USMCA) signed by the three countries’ leaders more than six months ago.

Each day without action on USMCA is another day of uncertainty for American farmers and our rural communities.

Each year, U.S. food and ag industries export $20.5 billion in goods to Canada and $18.6 billion to Mexico. Those dollars are what keep our farms and manufacturing facilities open. Those dollars are the backbone of our rural communities supporting Main Street USA.

Today, however, farmers as well as food and ag businesses are struggling. The combination of record low prices, devastating weather episodes and uncertain markets have had a dramatic impact on our families, our friends and neighbors. Our communities are facing a significant increase in farm bankruptcies that ripple through the food and ag supply chains and hurt main street businesses throughout rural America.

Uncertainty in trade has had a major impact on U.S. agriculture. We have suffered from retaliatory tariffs, lost market share, and watched while America’s competitors are seen as more reliable trading partners. The reasons for this crisis are manifold but providing certainty about continued trade with two of our three largest export markets would provide America's farmers and food manufacturers with a needed boost.

Simply put, U.S. farmers and food and ag businesses need a win – now more than ever.

We have a rare opportunity to bring Congress together to quickly help U.S. food and ag; North American trade is an area where we know both parties can cooperate. The USMCA builds on the success of NAFTA and modernizes and updates that agreement with important provisions that support U.S. agriculture, manufacturing, and services as well as drive American innovation and competitiveness. With both Mexico and Canada moving to implement the trade deal, it is time for the U.S. Congress to engage and adopt this agreement.

Ratifying USMCA is a top priority for the nation's agriculture community. We look forward to action from both parties in the House and the Senate and are asking that you work together to pass the USMCA as soon as possible. We are counting on our elected officials to champion the folks back home and appreciate your urgent action.

The USMCA trade agreement between America, Canada, and Mexico has just been signed.  On Monday, I will post a letter regarding Farmer's response to the Agreement, which has just been signed into law.

With Globalization, Scientists Should Be Minimizing Carbon Footprints

Traveling to and from conferences should be reconsidered given the world that we live in today.

We live in a world connected by the internet. With the click of a mouse, a person in the United States can be laughing and singing with a resident in Bangladesh, India. The stretch of technology has made possible the seemingly impossible. With that in mind, why are scientists still traveling around to conferences unnecessarily? That is a point of contention.

With this technological improvement optimized, why are scientists still flying around the world to attend scientific conferences? Especially, when they are advocating the world to reduce their own carbon footprint?

These questions need to be answered in order to instill the courage to change among people in society. According to an article published by the Associated Press, people tend to change when the authority is using less carbon than they are currently using.

Which is to say, a person is unlikely to change if the professor/scientist is advocating reducing their carbon footprint while flying around the world advocating the message — using large amounts of carbon while doing so. The author states that the scientist responds by citing that airline travel is around 3% of contributions to all global carbon emissions. I will step in and say — so what do you need to fly all over the world to spread your message?

Scientific Conferences Breed Collaboration

Scientists often meet unexpected scientists working on similar or different research projects at scientific conferences. The dialogue or discussion can in some cases yield great collaborations for the future decades. Which in turn, can yield important scientific advances in a given field.

Which begs the question: Are scientific conferences important?

The answer is a resounding YES. I do not think that any scientist would question the importance of certain conferences which they like to attend. There are certain conferences that can seem redundant or not important to a respective scientist. This depends on their research and interests in the end.

All scientists do not need to attend all conferences throughout the entire year. Why not rearrange conferences? To date, conferences have grown out of control to the point where attending every talk is not just unheard of but literally (and physically) impossible. Which begs the question of the need to attend in the end.

Is there a better way to disseminate new scientific findings to the world?

Webinars are popular today and well attended by different communities around the world. Why not make more webinars for scientists to watch? Then the actual scientist/professor might be more accessible if they are at their academic institution to both an audience and their graduate students. Research relationships might be stronger as a result (I thought that I would throw that one in there for any scientist who has had a “hands-off” advisor).

There must be a better way to reduce a scientist's carbon footprint which does not require them to lose their academic/research rank. The answer is not far away. Especially, with creative people and technology today. Each of us needs to think about solutions rather than just giving in to the status quo.

The article in the Associated Press gives a large number of excuses as to why scientists need to travel and use more carbon than need be. I call bull. Each of us can learn how to reduce our footprint a little each day. Which would amount to a large scale across nations.

Climate Change Is Broadly Accepted

Change is being called around the world. With the COP25 talks wrapping up in Madrid this week, more actionable plans by various nations will come to light over the next few weeks. This is good.

On top of this great news, some large investors are pulling investments out of fossil fuels. A nordic investor recently pulled $24 billion of investment funds from fossil fuel investments and reinvested them in fossil-free investments. The fund called Storebrand is in Norway and has completely divested fossil fuel investments.

In a recent article from the Washington Post, a large number of Americans broadly accept climate change. Although, the contributors to climate change and the solutions to combat climate change are not well known among Americans. The article is filled with interesting statistics on the causes and contributors to climate change and people’s understanding of them.

The fact that climate change has been raised to the international stage (which is normal) along with having an unusually large number of Congressional hearings this year so far (which is unusual), suggests that climate change may be taken more seriously in the years to come. Especially, as voters head to the voting polls next November for their choice to lead the nation over the next 4 years to a decade.

The time has past to have a conversation about the various contributors to climate change. We stand at the point where each of us has to ask ourselves, what difference (small to large) on a daily basis can I make to reduce my carbon footprint today? The small choices will among large groups add up to a large change. Let’s start now.

The Trade War with China has been moving forward.  That is about all that can be said.  Aside from the usual news of the current administration sitting on the cusp of a 'great trade deal.' Some economists say that the Trade War with China has moved the progress with other nations back several decades.  What about the GDP?

Ask farmers how their exports are performing to countries, including China?  President Trump has had to reverse the tariffs placed on China.  But he plans on reimplementing them coming up soon.  Why did he stop the taxes in the first place if they were working?  The truth is that the taxes from China are not working for the average American consumer.  The American consumer is the person suffering from the added expense of imports.  This could have been alleviated or avoided had President Trump never even entered a Trade War, to begin with.  Amazing.  Stay tuned.

President Trump Goes After SNAP Recipients to Save Money?

Among the most irrational acts that President Trump has done, ranks serving fast food to our nation's athletes.  Yes, our highly tuned athletic instruments (sports athletes) get to visit the White House only to be fine dined with Mc Donald's and other famous name brands.  To top this class act, our cheeseburger eating President has decided to pursue saving money by cutting out various recipients from the SNAP funding.  What?



According to Politico Agriculture, this brief message arrived in my email box regarding the cuts to the program:

ON WATCH FOR A FINAL FOOD STAMPS RULE: The Agriculture Department is planning to soon release its final rule to stiffen work requirements for millions of able-bodied adults on SNAP — a central piece of the Trump administration's broader effort to cutback on who qualifies for safety net programs.

This week? The White House budget office last week finished its review of the rule, and some SNAP policy watchers expect it to be released this week. A USDA spokesperson on Monday said the department plans to publish the final rule in the Federal Register "soon."

Stricter criteria for waivers: Under current law, ABAWDs can't receive SNAP benefits for more than three months during a three-year period, unless they're working or enrolled in an education or training program for 80 hours a month.

But many states waived this time limit to ensure broader access to the program during an uneven economic recovery. The Trump administration wants to tighten the criteria states must meet when applying for these waivers. Earlier this year, USDA estimated that 755,000 individuals would be dropped from SNAP if the proposal took effect.

State officials remain worried about the policy. Washington Gov. Jay Inslee wrote to OMB on Nov. 20 asking for a meeting before the rule was cleared by the White House, citing "serious concerns."

"The impacts of these changes would be deeply harmful and far-reaching — not only for Washington, but for every state," wrote Inslee, echoing concerns raised by local officials across the country.

Farm bill flashback: It was just a year ago that President Donald Trump signed the farm bill into law (a farm bill that, Democrats often note, rejected a similar attempt to crackdown on work requirements). At the signing ceremony, Trump touted the coming ABAWD rule, saying, "I think, in the end, it's going to make a lot of people very happy." USDA formally released its proposed rule in February. The department received more than 140,000 comments , largely in opposition to the plan.

What's next? After the final rule is released, there are likely to be lawsuits.

NEW SNAP DATA: While we're here, USDA's Food and Nutrition Service on Monday released its updated report on the characteristics of SNAP households. The 160-page report says that about 7 percent of the individuals on SNAP are considered ABAWDs.

It is shocking to see that the president can stand up in front of a crowd of people and say that cutting the food aid to 755,000 Americans is going to make people happy.  Who are these people who are going to be pleased with the expense of 755,000 Americans not receiving food assistance?  Amazing.



The SNAP has drawn criticisms and questions from a variety of angles this year alone.  Retailers have been under fire to give up SNAP data, which ultimately landed the issue in the hands of the U.S.  Supreme Court.



The number of SNAP recipients has been under fire.  Earlier this year, I wrote a blog post where the projection of ABAWD's would be as high as 3.1 million Americans.  Luckily, the number has been dropped to 755,000 Americans.  Which is still too many people to justify a small amount of savings to the Federal government over 10 years.



It is time for Americans to stand up and unite and demand that the government stop taking excessive amounts of money from their pockets.  Additionally, saving small amounts of money over 10 years at the expense of starving 755,000 Americans is actually un-American.  Asking the American consumer to pay for tariffs for a president's trade war, which did not need to be started in the first place is outrageous and excessive.



Stop trying to please a tiny fraction of the country's constituents at the expense of millions of American pocketbooks.  Start implementing measures (laws) that actually benefit the American consumer and result in a higher quality of life.

With populations of animals vanishing off the face of the planet, only one man could stand alone in his pursuit to think that climate change is not harming the earth.  That one man is President Donald J. Trump.  Of course, I imagine he is not really the only person who views climate change as a 'hoax' concocted by China.  With the COP25 climate talks underway in Madrid (Spain), one cannot help but wonder how such as 'outlier' could exist -- contrary to science and popular opinion (international opinion)? 

Then there are those citizens who are not only informed and believe science regarding climate change but want to rid the government of nay-sayers.  Those who do not see the light should be removed from office.  And with the consequences of not taking immediate action so high, how can I disagree?  Ralph Nader supports his argument with facts in his recent newsletter sent by email to subscribers:

Impeaching Trump for Deliberately Abetting the Climate Crisis Security Perils

It is time to take Donald Trump’s disregard for climate crisis seriously. As Commander in Chief, Trump is abdicating his duties to protect his people, instead actively aiding and abetting the corporate polluters who are causing the climate chaos. Trump is wasting irreplaceable time that we need to prevent a worsening climate crisis. Trump’s actions, expanding the fossil fuel industry’s emissions, make the perils even worse. This is another reason for impeachment—climate crisis jeopardizes the American people in major ways.

Trump denies the overwhelming scientific warnings about the devastating destruction of the global climate crisis. He calls climate disruption a “Chinese hoax,” taking his delusionary persona to loony, dangerous levels.

The world is experiencing unheard of environmental upheaval: unprecedented heat waves, rapidly melting glaciers and permafrost, record floods, intensifying hurricanes, more frequent and severe droughts, and massive habitat convulsions. Despite the clear warning signs the worse is yet to come, Trump is shredding regulatory standards designed by law to curb the emission of greenhouse gases by fossil fuels, such as coal. He is opening large areas to oil and gas production, including those on our federal lands, the Arctic wildlife refuge, and offshore.

Trump has also decided to weaken Obama-era emission standards, a move that even upset some auto companies. Ford, Volkswagen, Honda and BMW all supported the stricter regulations set by California over those proposed by the Trump administration. Cutting back on energy efficient technologies releases more greenhouse gases, reduces gas mileage efficiency, and accelerates climate chaos.

It is as if Trump reacts to massive spreading wildfires by denying their causes, then doing nothing to diminish them. To make matters worse, it is as if he actively lowers environmental regulatory standards that would have played a role in preventing these fires.

The Pentagon keeps warning Trump and his cohorts that the climate crisis is a national security danger. Draft-dodger Trump can be charged with weakening our national defenses up against the destructive power of a perturbed nature.

Sea levels are rising. City planners at Miami Beach have an evacuation plan for tidal flooding, not just for exposed homeowners, but for the city itself.

Almost every week, the press, even Fox News, reports record-breaking natural disasters around the world. Just this last week, the Washington Post graphically reported changes in climate that have “set off a devastating chain reaction in the Sea of Okhotsk.” The giant eye-witness article is called “Weakening ‘the heart of the North Pacific.’” The melting ice and the warming sea have resulted in far fewer salmon (salmon catch is down by 70 percent since 2004). The New York Times recently published a page one feature on accelerating heavy rains and destructive droughts that wreak havoc on India’s agriculture and destabilize both urban and rural life. Another issue facing both India and Pakistan is the fast melting glaciers in the high mountains that feed the life-critical down-stream rivers below that sustain a billion people.

Leading scientists, led by climatologists, are putting out regular reports, rooted in evidence on the ground, which keep shortening the time before certain irreversible benchmarks, as with warming temperatures, are experienced.

None of this enters the cranium of the oblivious Donald J. Trump. He is too busy tweeting, scheming and slandering to further his own interests. Our nation’s interests are, to put it mildly, not his primary concern. He remains bent on pulling out of the voluntary Paris Climate Accord by the deadline next year. He is making America last again, behind over  196 nations who have signed the agreement to cut their carbon dioxide and other climate-disrupting gasses to keep the temperatures from rising to 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit.

Trumpland is where desired ignorance replaces presidential intellect, where reckless disregard of mounting property losses and human casualties become photo opportunities for alighting from Air Force One. Trump makes vague promises of aid only to then provide far less than what the devastated communities desperately need.

Translated into constitutional terms, Mr. Trump is deliberately refusing to enforce the laws mandated by Congress for environmental and workplace protection. He has given our government over to corporations, putting in charge corrupt corporatists qualified only to dismantle and disable these health and safety agencies. His crony capitalists are pushing out the scientists and crushing the civil servants who have sworn to uphold the law.

In making our country more defenseless against a mankind-driven upending of nature’s equilibrium, he gravely violates his oath to promote the general welfare and provide for the common defense. In a deepening emergency, he is stealing crucial years away from critical preparedness, as his own generals would tell him. Instead, he continues to mouth his insane phrase “beautiful clean, coal,” a mineral that once burned becomes one of the most deadly contributors to climate catastrophes.

Children are marching in the millions all over the world demanding that national leaders and big corporations in the fossil fuel industry move toward renewable, efficient energy with the utmost speed. These youngsters, who are doing their homework, are frightened over what will batter them in the coming decades. Trump should feel ashamed by their desperate pleas.

Our founding fathers often spoke of thinking ahead and respecting “posterity.” The desire to foresee and forestall was especially paramount for Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson, not to mention the prescient Thomas Paine. For them and their colleagues, Trump would have been seen as a monarchical nightmare or and an impeachable offender on the climate crisis alone.

I have written about the link of climate change to National Security already on this site.  I have presented overwhelmingly strong (bipartisan) support (from congress) for action regarding climate change.  What more is necessary for the average citizen to see that not taking action to mitigate the challenging effects of climate change will only worsen our quality of life?



Don't believe me?  How frequently have storms increased in our nation?  What is the damage of those storms to our infrastructure?  Have the frequency of the rains started to outpace our ability to rebuild the cities which are struck so severely?  What amazes me is that those cities hit the hardest tend to ignore the scientific truths regarding climate change?



The time has come to wake up to the challenging times that face us as a nation ahead regarding dealing with the effects of climate change.  Otherwise, we will find ourselves asking the same question when a storm front emerges and threatens us: Does this storm have anything to do with the threat of climate change?
